Sunday at Showa Park ...

It was beautiful day...

and we enjoyed spending time with Nanami and her parents. Nanami was born two days after Aloysius and they were in the hospital together as newborns 6 months ago...how time flies!

The story behind the nickname FLOUNDER...

A lot of you have asked Patty why is her e-mail address PJFlounder?? I helped patty setup her e-mail one day using AOL, and it was time to input the screen name, after several tries with names already taken --she eventually chose "PJFlounder". I give her credit for wanting this "infamous" name because I never laughed so hard in my life over this incident giving her the nickname "Flounder". This is what happened... Skyrink put on, I think, the 1999 President's Day hockey tourney - and several teams from skyrink joined. But our team was a mix of players and levels and I didn't know any of them - but a good group. AND as you can guess - one of the players was Patty Jimenez. She was new to the area, wanted to play hockey, and got put on this team. I'd watch her skate well, and take the guys out in the corner, move them out in front of me and skate hard, pursue the puck. So she was good I thought. But at the time -she's still just a player on this team and is nice enough I guess - we're not friends but getting to know each other. So now it's just before gametime - and in the locker room - Patty is getting dressed, and she has a pant shell that goes over her hockey pants. It's this big blue shell that is rather large - and would fit Shaq if he wore it. Anyway - it's pulled over her pants, and I recognize her when I see her blue shell. So we're in the middle of a good game, and there is action in my zone - and the play is running up and down, back and forth across the ice - and I"m watching Patty follow the play - Well to my "horror" as Patty is skating hard and into the action HER BLUE SHELL HAS COME LOOSE AND IS SLOWLY FALLING DOWN!!! And she doesn't realize it!! I'm watching as it slowly slides down her legs, past her butt, and it's hanging LOW on her body! AND she's still playing like mad across the ice, and she's hasn't noticed it's falling! And she' not stopping to pull it back up! And I'm all - "oh no, oh no - it's a good thing she's good because she's in trouble!" - as the shell is now hanging over her knees and just above her shins, and she's still trying to move!!! But it continues to fall -- I know now that everyone on the ice knows that her pant shell is falling but she kept on playing UNTIL THE SHELL HAD FALLEN ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE ICE AND SHE CAN'T SKATE ANYMORE BECAUSE IT'S FALLEN TO THE GROUND, AND IT'S WRAPPED AROUND HER SKATES, AND SHINS AND KNEES --SHE NOW HAS TO TRY TO PULL THE SHELL UP AS SHE CAN'T SKATE ANYMORE!
SO THERE SHE IS - SHE HAS TO STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF OUR ZONE, AND SHE'S RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME TO MY UPPER RIGHT - AND SHE'S TRYING TO PULL THE SHELL UP STANDING THERE AND SHE STILL CAN'T. AT THIS POINT SHE CAN'T EVEN SKATE OFF THE ICE.. And the play is still going on... SHE NOW HAS TO DROP HER GLOVES AND STICK -- AND LAY DOWN ON THE ICE ON HER BACK -AND HAS TO WIGGLE AROUND LIKE A FISH OUT OF WATER IN ORDER TO PULL THEM UP TO HER BODY!!!! (I am laughing so hard now as I write this) AND I CAN'T BELIEVE SHE'S DOING THIS. And the action is still going on! SHE GETS THE PANTS ON FINALLY, SOMEHOW, AND THEN GOT OFF THE ICE. I DIDN'T LAUGH AT ALL DURING THIS - I JUST STOOD THERE & DIDN'T LAUGH - SO AS NOT TO EMBARRAS HER - AS WE ALL TRIED TO BE "NICE" ABOUT IT - BUT THEN THE FACE OFF TOOK PLACE TO THE RIGHT OF ME - AND ALL THE PLAYERS WERE LINED UP WITH SNICKERS ON THEIR FACES REALLY TRYING NOT TO LAUGH AND THE REF - HIS LAST NAME IS NIXON - HE STOOD THERE BEFORE DROPPING THE PUCK AND SAID WITH THIS BEWILDERED GRIN ON HIS FACE, "I'VE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THAT EVER." ANOTHER TEAMMATE THOUGHT WE WERE ON A PENALTY KILL BECAUSE SHE DIDNT' REALIZE THAT PATTY WAS ON THE ICE GETTING HER PANTS ON. The game ended and I never said a word to Patty about it. However the word got out - and it seems the ref - Nixon - called her a FLOUNDER on the ice. And that's where the name comes from! It was oh I think six months later - I was in a restaurant with other teammates and Patty was with us and we're now good friends - this incident came up and everyone "heard" the story - but Patty let me tell it - as I was there - AND I NEVER LAUGHED SO HARD In MY LIFE - TEARS COMING DOWN MY FACE TELLING THE STORY. I didn't laugh about it at the time. must have been released at that moment. And lucky me - she only lets me tell the story but since everyone has asked about it - I had to finally write about it.
