5-28-13 Diabetes update

This is the 6th container full of sharps since little A was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes 1 year, 2 months and 22 days ago.  Aloysius continues to be wonderful with his intense management needs and his A1C continues to be a good value...7.2 :)   He is getting very good at taking his own blood sugar but is not quite consistent yet.  Aloysius continues to learn what it feels like when his blood sugar is high and when it is low.  He is pretty good at announcing when he is low because he feels tired and hungry; and because he gets to eat something sweet!  The highs are a bit more difficult still, but little by little and with continuous education he will learn that as well:)  Flounder and Hairpin were very excited at our last MD visit in April when there was NO mention of a pump!!!!  Many folks and little ones younger than Aloysius use a "pump" to distribute insulin.  It stays on your body, there is no needle sticks and it gives more accurate insulin doses.  Aloysius has not shown much interest in one.  He takes all his finger sticks (6-10 a day) and his insulin shots (4-6 a day) like a champ.  Flounder and Hairpin do not see a need for a pump right now, but pretty much the rest of the Diabetes world swears by them.  The main reasons Aloysius does not have one are because he does very well with his finger sticks and insulin shots, his A1C is pretty good and because Flounder and Hairpin do not feel he needs something constantly on his body at 3 years of age.  This is a time where he should be carefree in exploring his environment so why take it way prematurely without the need.  In the future, when little A is older he may ask for it.  When that times come or when his Diabetes Management is not effective as is, a pump will be welcome in our lives with open arms.
